Let’s head down to Design Fetish in Des Moines, Iowa for today’s #SmallBizSalute!

Design Fetish is a business that sells wreaths, centerpieces, planters and holiday décor. They produce luxury decorations for commercial and personal use and provide their products to hotels, restaurants and homes.

Deshara Thomas Bohanna is the proud owner of Design Fetish. An Ankeny native, Bohanna runs her business in Des Moines where she says she can easily find resources for her products through other small businesses.

“When you contribute to small businesses, you make your own community,” says Bohanna.

The name Design Fetish comes from Bohanna’s love for home décor and her love for shoes, which made her think of the phrase “shoe fetish,” which gave her the idea for Design Fetish.

“I love to design people’s visions and there’s no right or wrong when you’re creating. Creativity isn’t restrictive,” says Bohanna.

When Bohanna decided to start her business, it was a very busy time. During that stage of her life, she was taking graduate courses, working full-time, going through a divorce and figuring out the ways of single-parenting three little girls under the age of three.

Bohanna established her business on September of 2016 and has been in business since. Her business began with only selling luxury wreaths but has now expanded to also selling floral pieces.

When starting her business, Bohanna said her biggest risk was deciding to go full-time, being the head of her household and her three girls. However, as her business has succeeded, Bohanna says the most rewarding aspect of it all is the people she meets and the joy she is able to give them by decorating their personal spaces.

Throughout her time building her business, Bohanna’s greatest supporters were many of her friends, the U.S. Small Business Administration and many others.

A piece of advice Bohanna made for any aspiring entrepreneurs is to simply be confident in yourself.
