Paris Barraza | Des Moines Register

In reflecting on the remarkable achievements of local artist and advocate Jill Wells, I am filled with gratitude for her groundbreaking work in the realm of accessible art. Jill has unveiled the first of her transformative 3D mural models, a visionary project that transcends traditional barriers to art appreciation. Through these scaled-down replicas, meticulously designed to be tactile and inclusive, Jill has ensured that individuals with visual impairments can now experience the beauty of murals through touch and feel. Her dedication to fostering accessibility is not only evident in the innovative Blackboard Sensory Project but also in her role as the first artist fellow at the Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement at Drake University. Jill's strategic plan, shaped during her fellowship, exemplifies her commitment to using the arts as a catalyst for policy impact. Her persistence and advocacy, coupled with the tangible outcomes of projects like the 3D mural models, have the potential to revolutionize the way we engage with art in both outdoor and indoor spaces. Jill's visionary efforts underscore the transformative power of art as a tool for inclusivity, and for that, we extend our heartfelt thanks to her.
