Mainframe Studios inspired a cross-country move

"Escape to the Midwest: A Tech Professional and Artist's Unexpected Journey to Des Moines, Iowa"

Embarking on a quest for a new life outside the hustle and bustle of New York City, a dynamic couple found an unexpected haven in the heart of Iowa. Sarah, a tech employee with a penchant for good food and city walkability, and Kyle, an artist specializing in designer toys, were drawn to the promise of a high quality of life with a lower cost of living. Initially skeptical of the suggestion to move to Des Moines, Iowa, their perceptions took a dramatic turn as they delved into the vibrant art community and opportunities awaiting them.

Their journey led them to Mainframe, the largest nonprofit creative workspace in the nation, located in Des Moines. The discovery of this colorful hub became the decisive factor in their relocation. Armed with the virtual guidance of Google Street View, the couple secured an apartment in Des Moines’ pet-friendly elevator building, signing the lease without setting foot in the state until their move in November 2021.

As they announced their decision, friends and acquaintances were skeptical, thinking the couple had lost their minds. However, for Sarah and Kyle, it was a familiar leap into the unknown, echoing their adventurous spirit honed during years of traveling the country in an RV from 2015 to 2018.

The unexpected benefits of their move unfolded as connections in their designer toy network already resided in Des Moines. One contact even welcomed them with assistance in unloading their truck and a taste of local brews. Now, as part of the "Artists of Mainframe" collective, Kyle and his collaborators tap into the creative energy and supportive community, defying the cutthroat nature often associated with pursuing artistic dreams.

Their story is not just a relocation; it's a testament to the transformative power of embracing the unknown, chasing dreams, and finding a vibrant community in the unlikeliest of places—Des Moines, Iowa.
